Get to know our newest Personal Trainer, James:

When & why did you decide to become a PT?

Growing up in Marple Bridge, in a valley on the edge of the peak district I am a grounded person who enjoys the simple things in life. An ideal morning would be a cup of coffee with the sun on my face and views of the rolling hills playing Uno with my children, Aubrey and Aurora, and partner Sophie.
It was here I started to play Lacrosse, in my younger days representing England and, now I am getting on a bit (in Lacrosse terms), representing Scotland thanks to my Scottish heritage.
As I spent most of my free time training for lacrosse in the gym it made sense to start my PT journey in 2011 whilst finishing university in Leeds. After a decade of training people in London and beyond I took a short hiatus while starting my family. But now, I am happy to be back in the industry I know and love at a great place like Instinct.

What do you love about your job?

The best thing about PTing will always be the people you get help along their journey and seeing the joy of being fit and healthy brings to them.

What is your favourite exercise?

It is hard to pick a favourite exercise, I know that exercise is the gateway to great mental and spiritual well-being so any specific exercise which takes a person away from their daily challenges and into the moment is the best for them. Often these exercises are the ones we find the most challenging so my most and least favourite exercise is heavy barbell squats.

What motivates you?

I find a lot of motivation in the stories of others and my drive to help people, but when it comes to the gym I think motivation fades and to stay consistent we have to develop strong discipline; much easier said than done.

Quote to live by…

There are a lot of inspirational quotes which I have heard over the years but nothing says it more than, “Don’t take life too seriously, you’ll never get out alive”. But again, easier said than done.

What is your favourite treat?

And with that in mind, there is nothing I enjoy more than a pizza movie night followed by a bag of Malteasers with the family.
