I was always the sporty one growing up, and maybe a little bit feral, definitely more interested in adventures than domestic life. This all changed in 1997 when my daughter was born, soon followed by her three brothers… This was my “domestic goddess” era! Growing veggies and baking bread, and absolutely adoring being a Mammy. During this time my relationship with my body changed dramatically too. Pregnancy and all that followed left me feeling disconnected from the physical form, for the first time I didn’t feel comfortable or confident in my own skin.
As the kiddos grew up and the demands of motherhood changed again, I began to rebuild my relationship with my body. The first thing I did was pull on some trainers and began to run… for about 3 mins before I was wheezing and cursing. Everything felt wrong, and so challenging! I knew that I needed a plan and this is where it all began. I threw myself into learning, and started collecting qualifications and a BSc in Sports Science. But most importantly, I implemented everything I learnt and used myself as the guinea pig.
Without a doubt, my favourite thing is the look on a client’s face when they achieve their goal… It’s priceless, and gives me warm fuzzies. It doesn’t matter if that goal is just stepping inside the gym for the first time, hitting a personal best, or just feeling their best self – it’s all awesome!
In the gym – I love it all, from bulgarians to burpees. But I find my peace in the wild places, running in Eryri, or the Lakes and finding a wild swim spot after. Perfection!
Overhead pressing is my nemesis, but I’m all about progression not perfection!
This has evolved on my personal journey, from wanting to have a certain aesthetic “look”, to where I am today – building my “old lady” body. I want to live as long as I can, as well as I can.
I think it was Henry Ford that said:
“If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got.”
Basically if you don’t like it, change it!
Marvellous creations, the popping candy one!
